풍자적인 가사라지만 내게는 좀 슬프게 들리는 이 곡을 피트 시걸을 애도하며 올리는 데에는 이유가 있다. 일단 피트 시걸에 대해 간단하게 설명하자면, 피트 시걸은 민중가수였고, 활동가였으며, 아나키스트들은 물론 많은 사람들에게 사랑 받던 포크가수였다. 재개발로 인한 철거나 시위 현장 가장 앞에 서서 먼저 노래를 부르던 사람이었다. 그냥 정치적인 인물이었을까? 아니다. 한 때 쟈니 캐시과 같은 60년대 최고의 가수들을 초대해 같이 연주하던 레인보우 퀘스트 쇼의 사회자이기도 했다.

위의 곡은 원래 Malvina Reynolds의 1962년 곡으로 교외 지역의 개발과 함께 타협적인 중산층을 정치적으로 풍자한 곡으로 가사 중의 작은 모두 다른 색의 집 그러나 모두 똑같아 보이는 집의 ticky tacky라는 가사는 그 당시 부정하게 돌아가는 재개발 공사를 비꼬는 것이다. 전후 세대인 그녀가 바라본 당시의 캘리포니아가 이 노래를 배경이었기 때문이고, 이 곡은 67년 콜럼비아 레코드에서 발매되었다. 하지만 널리 알려지진 못했다.
그런데 어떻게 피트 시걸의 little boxes로 더 유명해졌을까? 레이놀즈의 친구이자 민중가수, 활동가이던 피트 시걸이 60년대 시위 현장들을 누비며 부르면서 세계적으로 널리 알려졌고, 2000년 Ear to the Ground 라는 그룹에 의해 다시 이슈가 되었다. 이 곡은 Death Cab for Cutie, Rise Against, Regina Spektor, The Shins, The Womenfolk and Walk off the Earth, Devendra Banhart, Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, Ben Folds, Elvis Costello, Tim DeLaughter of The Polyphonic Spree, Donovan, Skott Freedman, Engelbert Humperdinck, The Individuals, Jenny and Johnny, Angélique Kidjo, Rilo Kiley, Kinky, Man Man, The Mountain Goats, Randy Newman, Nina & Frederik, Ozomatli, Phosphorescent, The Real Tuesday Weld, Anjan Dutt, The Submarines, Billy Bob Thornton, and The Decemberists 등에 의해 다시 커버되어 연주되기도 했다.
